#RealRevolutionaries
The #BlackLivesMatter movement has highlighted once again the scourge of racism and the depth of inequality that people feel based on race. Much of the media and discussion around the matter is emerging from the US. In South Africa, however, protests linked to #BlackLivesMatter have particularly been seen in the independent schools and in what were once called “Model-C” schools with strong traditions. Why is this? Is race a sufficient conceptual framework to understand this protest and the very real inequalities that still persist in post-apartheid South Africa? What other conceptual frameworks may help us to discern our times and know what to do? At the end of the day what will drive an enduring revolution of equal opportunities for all and how do we raise a society of real revolutionaries who are in it for the long-term, not just while the anger gives energy to protest? #RealRevolutionaries is a programme seeking to foster genuine understanding, empathy and hospitality between people in South Africa and beyond, enabling the forging of communities that are hospitable to all.
