Passion
At Freedom Church we are passionate about seeing the rule and reign of God benefitting everyone in the Umgeni basin. In the Bible, the area of God’s influence is called the Kingdom of God or the Kingdom of Heaven. We are one of many communities that God has planted in the Umgeni Valley to bring the Kingdom to the people and environment of our area, and we love joining hands with other communities, such as churches, to see those benefits realized in the lives of the people of Umgeni.
We were formally launched in the first weekend of February 2020. That was a culmination of some years of dreaming and gathering people to that dream. During the course of 2019 a number of families moved from various parts of South Africa to join us and this new community was birthed. We would love nothing more than having you visit us and even more, to join us in becoming a disciple of Jesus on a mission to reach this Valley and the nations of the world where God will send us.
Culture
The culture of our community is marked by a commitment to:
People not just Programmes
God has ordained that his rule will be advanced through people. This is what it means to be created in the image of God. Programs can be helpful, but all ministries that come from the church will originate from people who are called and gifted by God, and equipped and released by local leaders (Eph 4:12).
Discipleship not just Attendance
Jesus called his followers to one thing; making disciples (Matt 28:19). We often measure the church’s success by its numbers or its financial resources, but Jesus is concerned about whether we are making disciples. These are followers of Jesus who love God above everything and are helping others to do likewise.
Kingdom not just Church
The Church has a vital place in God’s plans. It is God’s primary tool. But the goal is far greater than the church – to bring everything together under Christ’s rule (Eph1:10) – this is the kingdom. This is what our lives and our church community exist for. This is to be the focus of our prayers and our resources.
Reproduction not just Growth
All through God’s creation, mature organisms will reproduce themselves. That’s how God designed nature to fill the earth, and in the same way, his kingdom will also fill the world. Our best efforts are to equip and release others in ways that will also enable them to reproduce in the same way (2Tim 2:2).

In the early days of this new church community God spoke to us from Acts 2:42ff about what the early church gave themselves to. So we too want to devote ourselves to:
The apostles’ doctrine
Their message was revolutionary – ‘Jesus is the fulfilment of everything we had hoped for’. Every promise that God had made to rescue the world and bring his rule to it was coming true in Jesus, and through the people who believed in him.
Fellowship
This was a community like no other. Different cultures, different social and economic backgrounds, yet experiencing the joy of sharing their lives together as a new family, demonstrating the life of Jesus to the watching world.
Breaking bread
They proclaimed the great rescue act of God every time they met together, by eating together the meal that Jesus had given them, remembering his death and celebrating their freedom from sin, death and the devil.
Prayer
The natural focus of their gatherings was God himself, who had rescued them and come to live in them through the Holy Spirit. Their joy in prayer was recognising his presence, calling on him in their need and proclaiming his goodness.
